College Prep Seminar

- Avani & Arnav Kashyap

On Saturday, December 16th 2017 at the William T. Cosby Public Library in Coppell, MKANT organized its first ever College Prep Seminar presented by Mr. Rajkamal Rao. A new venture for MKANT as an organization, it became an instant success as the vast knowledge and passion of the speaker combined with the active audience to give a fitting end to another great year for MKANT in 2017. The guest presenter, Mr. Rajkamal Rao has helped hundreds of students gain admission to the nation’s most sought-after universities as well as authored a book on college selection and founded a full-service college admission and counseling firm. The attendees of the seminar were educated on the different aspects of college admission such as the combination of the acceptance and yield rates. The yield rate is an integral aspect of the college admission process that is the percent of students who choose to enroll in a particular university after having been offered admission. Mr. Rao allowed the audience to gain an insider’s look into what colleges truly look for in an applicant. The presentation emphasized the importance of your high school academic grades in the 5 core subjects of MSHEL (Math, Science, History, English, and Foreign Language) as well as course selection recommending 4 years of the MSHE courses and at least 3 years of a foreign language. Advanced courses such as AP classes and the IB program were highly encouraged to showcase the applicants’ readiness to take college level courses. Furthermore, the presentation expounded on the importance that colleges place on standardized test scores such as the SAT and ACT. Most importantly, it revealed that it is never too early to start thinking about college and preparing a good high school pathway is the key to success. The seminar opened many new doors for both parents and students and the informative and educational presentation was then followed by a Q&A session.

It was a memorable co-incidence that Mr.Sunil Hiranniah, an active member of MKANT presented the speaker a copy of "Hindustan Times"(a National News paper of India) which he purchased at the Mumbai airport. And it had Mr.Rao's picture and article in front page! The article was about the college selection tips and visa process for the Indian students planning for higher education in US.
